We enjoyed a hearty meal at Local 360, which was steps away from our resting place, the Ace Hotel. I failed to take pictures of the beautiful food...I must've been hungry. Their vegetarian pot pie was fantastic!

I recently shot Claire Thomas for an ad campaign for The Americana at Brand that can be found in this month's issue of Los Angeles Magazine. Exciting!

Claire is a food-enthusiast, commercial director, food photographer, writer, blogger, and is also the host of the TV show Food for Thought with Claire Thomas on ABC. She is thoroughly inspiring with her many talents. Just take a look at her food blog and you'll fall in love! One of my favorite recipes of hers is S'meaches (watch the vid above for an overload of goodness).

*Art direction and ad design by Cleo Murnane of Project M Plus. A few outtakes from the shoot can be seen on my photography blog, here.

GUEST POST // BREAKFAST ON THE GO by CASEY KEASLER

Hi there, it's Casey from K.I.D. Collective again. I'm an interior designer and I blog from time to time about my work, what inspires me and the food I love. When Jennifer asked me to put together a post while she's out traveling, I immediately thought about a travel related post (and how she always seems to be on the go) and then the food. We both love the food.

In my mind, you're either a breakfast person or you aren't, there's no middle ground for this one. I happen to fall in the breakfast loving category. My favorite breakfast is a weekend morning when I can relax with a cup of coffee, catch up on whatever I happen to be reading at the moment and then make breakfast, almost always a few hours after I wake up. I've never been much of a wake up and eat kind of girl.

The rest of the week, when I'm not up a few hours before I head to work, I try to plan ahead and take my own breakfast with me. My favorite is lowfat Greek yogurt, granola, seasonal fresh fruit all topped off with honey. I like putting it in a pint sized mason jar because it's so much nicer eating out of glass than plastic and because the mason jar cap screws on and doesn't ever pop off in my bag. My cousin-in-law, Jora, makes a great granola recipe if you want to make it yourself instead of buying. The recipe card below can be saved or scaled and printed on a 3x5 note card too. Enjoy!

Turntable Kitchen | Connecting Food + Music

posted on: September 08, 2011

"Turntable Kitchen is a site connecting food and music, born in a foggy Inner Sunset, San Francisco apartment and run by an inspired couple: Kasey (also known as Ksenya) and Matthew. They feature recipes with a focus on local, fresh ingredients, hand-selected 'Musical Pairings,' album reviews and musings on their city livin' and country hoppin' adventures. Most importunely, they aim to introduce food lovers to music and vice versa."

When I read about the musical pairing of a Squash Blossom Omelet + The Shins album, Oh, Inverted World (Garden State, anyone?), I was sold. I could get used to my meals having a musical companion! If you enjoy good music and good eats, you'll definitely enjoy exploring Turntable Kitchen.

They had me at "eat like you give a damn". Local, organic, and sustainable eats--right up my alley. Portage Bay Cafe had an incredible brunch selection and the "toppings bar" for their pancakes and french toast was unlike any I had seen before! I ordered the Lemon Curd French Toast and Josh ordered the Greek Omelette. Check out their menu and grab a napkin for your drool!

ORANGETTES

I didn't make the prettiest orangettes (I burnt some peels!), but they sure were tasty! Orangettes (if you couldn't figure out from the images!) are candied orange peels dipped in chocolate. As one of my favorite treats and inspired by Molly's blog orangette, I made these sweet snacks to satisfy my cravings and live the inspiration!

ORANGETTES
(adapted from Smitten Kitchen)

Ingredients:
Four Oranges
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Water
16 Oz Dark Chocolate

Slice the ends off of the oranges and remove the peel in it's entirety. Cut the peels into thin strips. In a medium sized pot, boil some water and toss the peels in to blanch them for a few minutes. Remove from heat, rinse with cold water and repeat the blanching process once more (this removes the bitterness from the peels).

Make the simple syrup by combining 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water in a separate sauce pan. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Place the peels in the simple syrup and simmer for one hour, checking often to make sure the syrup does not evaporate before the hour is up. Once the peels are cooked, remove them from the sauce pan and place on a rack to cool and drain.

Next, melt 16 ounces of chocolate in a double boiler. Dip the candied peels in the chocolate and place them on a piece of parchment paper to cool.

Indulge.
